What is Central Obesity?
Central obesity, also known as abdominal obesity or “pot belly,” is the accumulation of fat in the abdominal region. It is a major risk factor for a range of health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.
In fact, a research study conducted in the United States on a large population indicated that “skinny” people who carry extra weight around their mid-section may be at greater risk for early death than obese people
Causes of Central Obesity:
One of the common causes of central obesity is sedentary work. Sitting for long hours leads to the accumulation of fats, predominantly in the abdominal region.
Another cause of the increase in central obesity is changing food habits. Increased consumption of foods containing refined carbohydrates, unhealthy fats, and added sugars (fast foods like pizza, burgers, and aerated sweetened drinks, etc.) has resulted in higher cases of central obesity amongst urban as well as semi-urban and rural populations.
Other causes of central obesity include genetics and stress. Some people are genetically predisposed to store more fat in their abdominal region, which can lead to central obesity while high levels of stress can increase the production of cortisol, a hormone that can lead to the accumulation of abdominal fat.
Risks of Central Obesity
The reason why central obesity is so dangerous is that the fat that accumulates around the abdomen is metabolically active, and it produces hormones and other substances that can cause inflammation and insulin resistance, which are risk factors for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer. Additionally, central obesity is often associated with other unhealthy behaviors, such as a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary choices, which further increase the risk of health problems.
Reducing central obesity can significantly decrease the risk of developing these health problems.
Treatments to reduce Central Obesity:
Making healthy lifestyle choices, such as regular exercise, and a balanced diet, are imperative to reduce and control central obesity. But lifestyle changes alone may not be enough.
Sometimes, it may be required to treat central obesity with certain treatments. Various invasive and non-invasive fat reduction treatment options are available. One of these options is a treatment known as ‘HIFEM’ (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic).
What Are The Different Types Of Non-Invasive Fat Reduction?
What is HIFEM?
It’s essential to maintain a healthy weight, especially around the abdomen, to reduce the risk of chronic disease and maintain optimal health. HIFEM or High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic is an effective non-surgical non-invasive treatment option to reduce central obesity. HIFEM can increase muscle mass and reduce fat in the abdominal area thus accelerating the process towards achieving a healthy weight in the abdominal area.
HIFEM has benefits that go beyond treating central obesity and body contouring:
Muscle strengthening: HIFEM treatment can be used to strengthen muscles in the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and arms.
Postpartum recovery: HIFEM treatment can be used to help women recover from the physical changes that occur during pregnancy, such as diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles) and weakened pelvic floor muscles.
Incontinence: HIFEM treatment can be used to improve bladder control in people with urinary incontinence by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles.
Rehabilitation: HIFEM treatment can be used to aid in the rehabilitation of people recovering from injuries or surgeries that have resulted in muscle weakness or atrophy.
Sports performance enhancement: HIFEM treatment can be used to enhance athletic performance by increasing muscle strength and endurance.
It’s important to note that HIFEM treatment may not be suitable for everyone, and it’s important to consult with a medical professional to determine whether it’s an appropriate treatment option for you.
EMSculpt and EMShape are two popular brands of machines that are used to deliver HIFEM treatment. At Pandit Clinic, Pune, Dr. Sharvari Pandit has used the EMShape to treat patients with central obesity, and achieved positive results. Learn about it in detail in our blog about non-invasive fat reduction.
Remember: HIFEM treatments are NOT a substitute for exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Patients should still maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise routine to maintain their results. HIFEM works as an ‘accelerator’ in your journey towards a healthy body.
