About Glaucoma
Glaucoma (Raised Eye Pressure) is a serious disease that results in increased pressure in the eye and loss of vision. It adversely affects the optic nerve which leads to damaged vision. The resulting damage can cause loss of visual fields. If neglected you may lose vision completely. As there are no major symptoms this condition is often missed. The patients may not report until the last stage of the disease sets in.
Regular eye check-up in adults is important to diagnose and treat glaucoma at an early stage.
Many drugs are available to keep ocular pressure under control.
Laser treatment (SLT) selective laser trabeculoplasty is available at Pandit Clinic. Here the eye pressure can be reduced with the help of YAG laser. The laser is also used to treat closed-angle glaucoma.
Glaucoma needs a lifetime of monitoring. It is thus a disease that needs management and care over the patient’s life. Drug regimens are very effective, in some cases, surgery may be needed. We offer comprehensive care for glaucoma patients at Pandit Clinic under Dr. Jayashree Pandit.
What To Expect Before Laser Treatment For Glaucoma?
- As glaucoma can affect your vision by damaging the optic nerve inside your eye, it is extremely important that you get treatment as soon as possible. Generally, the surgery is not a primary option when treating glaucoma; however, if other primary treatments do not work or if you start experiencing side effects of the drugs used in primary treatments, then you have to get surgery.Â
- In some cases, people directly need to get surgery if the eye pressure is high and their vision is in immediate danger.Â
- The doctor will discuss your medical history in detail and would want to know if you have a family history of glaucoma to understand the root cause of occurrence.Â
- You may also have to go through general health evaluation to check whether you have serious conditions like diabetes or blood pressure which may affect your eye health.Â
- Certain eye tests like Tonometry Test, Pachymetry Test, Perimetry Test, Monitoring Optic Nerve, etc. are also done before the procedure.
How Is Laser Treatment Performed At Pandit Clinic?
- At Pandit Clinic, Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) laser treatment is available. It is a form of laser surgery that is used to lower intraocular pressure in glaucoma.Â
- In this treatment, laser energy is applied to the drainage tissue to drain the fluid out of the eye.
- When the laser is applied, some chemical and biological changes happen in the tissue that eventually helps to drain the fluid out of the eye which then lowers intraocular pressure.
- As this treatment absorbs minimal heat energy, it causes minimal pain and less scar tissue.Â
How Is Recovery After SLT?
- Post-surgery your vision may be blurry. This may last up to 6 weeks after the treatment. Also, you will not be able to use contact lenses until the swelling goes down.
- You can expect mild inflammation after the laser treatment, but it is treatable with eye drops or an oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
- In case intraocular pressure raises post-treatment or to keep intraocular pressure under control, you may have to stay on glaucoma medications.
- You will need to rest at home for about a week after the treatment. You are advised not to drive, read, bend over, or lift heavy objects for about 4 weeks.
- The doctor will provide specific instructions after the treatment as per your needs and requirements. Make sure you follow them and do follow up check-ups as planned.Â
