What Is Ptosis?

In Ophthalmology, ptosis is the medical term for drooping of the upper eyelid. The literal meaning of the word ‘ptosis’ is downward displacement. Patients suffering from Ptosis are very unhappy about their appearance due to this disease. It also restricts their field of vision and makes them look sleepy. Ptosis treatment in India is actually quite common, however, not many people are aware that the issue an be corrected with a safe and effective procedure.

How Is Ptosis Classified?

There are various reasons for Ptosis. A few probable causes for ptosis are a birth defect, disease or injury to the eye and old age. When it is present from birth, ptosis is called congenital ptosis. It can affect children and adults alike. Ptosis can affect one or both eyes. Like most medical conditions, Ptosis too occurs in degrees. When it is mild, it covers the pupils partially. Mild Ptosis surgery is also possible in order to correct the issue at hand. In more severe cases, Ptosis causes the eyelid to close the eyes completely.

Classification of Ptosis:

Ptosis can be broadly classified as:

A more detailed classification could be myogenic, aponeurotic, neurogenic, neuromuscular, mechanical, neurotoxic, traumatic or pseudoptosis. The broad and detailed classification plays a significant role in the final treatment. It is necessary to analyze the type of Ptosis the patient has in order to move ahead with the course of treatment. This is the reason Dr Jayshree Pandit, Pandit Clinic’s lead opthalmologist gives importance to consultation.

What Causes Ptosis?

The eyelid muscles are worked by the levator muscles, Muller’s muscles and the frontalis muscle. If the nerve that supplies blood to these muscles (the oculomotor nerve) is affected, the result is ptosis. With an injury or age, these muscles do not function properly, resulting in ptosis. One more factor that can cause ptosis is cataract surgery. It can also be caused due to an injury to the tendon connecting the levator muscle to the eyelid.

The early symptoms of ptosis include eyebrow aching, eyestrain and difficulty in keeping the eyes open. Fatigue while reading is also a common symptom. In some instances, ptosis may also signal the presence of a more serious underlying neurological disorder.

How Is Ptosis Treated?

By far, the most common reason for ptosis is the weakness of the levator muscles. Ptosis surgery, therefore, involves tightening of the levator muscles. In cases where the levator muscles are too weak, the eyelids are suspended under the eyelids so that the forehead muscles prop them up.

Ptosis surgery is generally performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia at Pandit Clinic. The surgery can take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes depending on the correction required. In case the correction is required on both the eyelids, the time taken for the surgery is more.

A cut is generally made on the natural crease of the eylid. Then, stitches are placed on the levator muscles to strengthen the attachment to the eyelid.

It is important to understand that weakness of muscles cannot be fully reversed. Therefore, while Ptosis surgery will improve the eyelid functionality, it may not exactly restore the working to 100%.

How Is Recovery Like After Ptosis Surgery?

Recovery for eyelid surgery for Ptosis is uncomlicated. But, certain care must be taken after the same. Dr Jayshree Pandit will ensure that all the instructions are provided in a proper way. She will advise you to not get your eyelid wet and avoid strenous exercising and bending. This might negatively hamper the recovery process.

Also, you should avoid wearing eye make up or step out in the direct sun for a few days after the surgery. Instruction for washing the face and maintaining proper hygiene at the site of the surgery will be given to you.

You can resume your daily routine and light exercising once the doctor gives a thumbs up.

Routine follow ups must be taken with Dr Jayshree Pandit in order to analyse the healing procedure as well as the results.

Is Ptosis Surgery Permanent?

Ptosis surgery correction is generally permanent. However, the ccondition may appear again. a second surgical ccorrection might be required then to correct the issue.

What Are The Benefits Of Ptosis Surgery?

Ptosis surgery corrects both, the aesthetic appearance as well as the function of the eyelid. as the eyelid is lifted up, the patient can observe an improvement in the vision. Also, the face starts looking even younger.

Is There An Alternative To Ptosis Surgery?

Generally, ptosis can be corrected only with the help of a surgery. In very rare cases, ptosis resolves on its own. Hence, ptosis correction does require a surgery.
