About Dental Emergencies
As a parent, one’s greatest fear is watching their child in pain or hurt. Emergencies can come at any time and in any form. It is, therefore, pertinent to be prepared to face them.
We at Pandit Clinic are at the forefront of dealing with dental care emergencies. Our first suggestion in case of an emergency is that you, as the parent, remain calm and assess the nature and impact of the injury or trauma. Do not attempt to fix the tooth on your own; bring your kid into Pandit Clinic for emergency assistance.
Dental Avulsion
Among many injuries to teeth, Dental Avulsion is one of the most severe forms of damage that requires emergency care. Dental avulsion is the complete displacement of a tooth from its socket in alveolar bone owing to trauma. The treatment, in case of permanent teeth, consists of replantation, as immediately as possible. Deciduous teeth should not be replanted due to the risk of damaging the permanent tooth germ.
A few tips for parents/ caregivers/ teachers and sports personnel, in case you encounter a dental avulsion injury:
- Keep the patient calm.
- Try to ascertain any other form of injury, e.g. concomitant head injuries need emergency care and should be prioritized over dental injuries.
- Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the white part). Avoid touching the root (the yellowish-brown part).
- If the tooth is dirty, wash it briefly (10 seconds) under cold running water and try to reposition it. Try to encourage the patient/parent to replant the tooth. However, if the tooth can’t be repositioned easily, don’t try to push it as it may cause untoward injury. Bite on a handkerchief to hold it in position.
- If this is not possible, place the tooth in a suitable storage medium. If the patient is very young, he/she could swallow the tooth- therefore, it is advisable to get the patient to spit in a container and place the tooth in it. Avoid storage in plain water. However, if nothing else is available, you could store the tooth in water for transportation.
- Seek emergency dental treatment immediately.
What to do if a permanent tooth is broken or knocked out?
- Find the tooth. Hold the tooth by the crown (the white part), not by the root (the yellow part).
- Replant immediately, if possible.
- If contaminated, rinse shortly with cold tap water and put the tooth back in its place. This can be done by the child or an adult.
- Hold the tooth in place. Bite on a handkerchief to hold it in position and go to the dentist immediately.
- If you can not put the tooth back in, place it in a cup of milk or saline. When milk or saline are not available, place the tooth in the child's mouth (between the cheeks and gums)
- Seek immediately specialized dental treatment Children between 7 and 10 years of age are more exposed to suffer avulsion due to the elasticity of the bone at this age.
