It will not be an exaggeration to say that vision is the most important of the five senses. Unfortunately, most people neglect their eyesight. In majority of the cases, many vision problems are left undetected and untreated, resulting in vision loss. Early detection of eye condition is the best way of minimizing vision loss. A regular eye examination from a qualified optometrist like Dr. Jayashree will be the best thing you do for your eyes. Her clinic in Pune is well equipped to determine the health of your eyes.
Dr. Jayashree Pandit uses automated HD eye charts to measure how well you see in the distance, compared with other human beings.
The most used test for checking vision is the Snellen eye chart. It was developed by Dutch eye doctor Hermann Snellen way back in the 1860s. There are many variations of the Snellen eye chart, but in general they show 11 rows of capital letters. The top row contains one letter (usually capital E). The other rows contain letters that are progressively smaller.
During an eye exam, the doctor will ask you to find the smallest line of text letters that you can make out, and ask you to read it. If you can read the bottom row of letters, your visual acuity is very good. Vision acuity simply means sharpness of vision.
A vision acuity of 6/6 is considered normal. What this means is that you can read at 20 feet a letter that most human beings should be able to read at 20 feet. If your eyesight has deteriorated, you will not be able to read properly. Your optometrist will test your vision with different glasses to determine which glasses will suit you the best.
A Note of Caution
Eye charts measure only vision acuity. They cannot check your peripheral vision, depth perception, color perception or ability to perceive contrast. They also do not measure other parameters of the eye. It is therefore recommended to do a complete eye check from a competent ophthalmologist Dr. Jayashree every year.
Once the eye test is complete, Dr. Jayashree will prescribe your glasses if the need arises. While choosing your spectacle frame, remember to choose one that is sturdy rather than cheap. Also remember that it should fit snugly rather than being loose or tight. Since your vision depends on them, choose glasses with care as well. It is advisable to invest in a good pair of glasses and spectacles than trying to save some money. If you are from Pune, there are many reputed and trustworthy optical shops in the city for you to choose from.
