Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for Hair Loss

One of the unique features of mammals is their ability to grow and regenerate hair. Hair follicles typically undergo repetitive regenerative cycles. Each cycle consists of three stages of hair growth:

  • Anagen - This is the stage where the hair growth is very rapid
  • Catagen - This stage happens at the end of the anagen stage. It signifies the end of the active growth of the hair. This stage lasts for 2 - 3 weeks.
  • Telogen - This is the resting stage for hair growth. The hair follicle gradually becomes lifeless and fall out. After the hair falls, the specific hair follicle becomes inactive for some period (about 2 - 3 months) before starting the cycle again.

Hair loss and hair thinning happen when this hair growth cycle is disrupted. Hair loss is a common condition that affects most people the world over. What is Low Level Laser Therapy?

In 1967, Hungarian researcher Mester found that 500 mili watts, low power 694 nm ruby laser increased hair growth on backs of shaved mice. Later, controlled clinical trials showed that Low Level Laser therapy (LLLT) stimulated hair growth in both men and women. LLLT works by enhancing the oxygen exchange chain in the mitochondria, leading to more ATP and Cyclic AMP formation. The displacement of nitric oxide & toxins out of the cells allows more oxygen to enter them. This stimulates better growth, induces angiogenesis, forming new blood vessels around the hair follicles, reduces inflammation and activates response to reactive oxygen species.

How does LLLT Work for Hair Growth?

The red light wavelength of the spectrum from a laser that emits 650—670 nm light can stimulate cells within the follicle, encouraging hair growth.

The energy of the low level lasers is delivered directly to the scalp. It promotes cellular metaboloism by increasing blood circulation and oxygen to the hair follicles. This in turn stimulates hair in the resting phase (telogen) to the growth phase (anagen).
